SHUATS is a non-for-profit institution where creativity and innovations are encouraged among faculties and students. The valuable intangible intellectual property generated by the experienced and young minds needs to be protected and employed for the benefit of the nation and university as a whole. SHUATS is one of the most prestigious research institutes in agriculture based innovations, and the intellectual property (IP) so generated can be used to provide security, stimulation and incentives for sustained and enhanced output for countries having agriculture based economy like India. Moreover, in the context of ever shortening product lifecycles and product differentiation and a market driven by vagaries, it is becoming more and more essential to generate, secure and manage Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) effectively.
In addition to this, innovations can also be used for attaining financial sustainability by generating potential income through business development activities. Furthermore, in the Indian scenario, innovations based on research through university effort are on the rise however small. The directorate intends to capitalize on research-based innovations through start-ups, spin-offs, licensing among other means. Moreover, the directorate focuses on projects such as regulation of contract research, research projects for innovation development and SME related grants. The Directorate also regulates consultancy done through the university. This includes providing know-how, expertise and human resources to third parties.
Aims and Objectives
- Organizing workshops and training programmes for faculty, staff and students to sensitize them about various policies for science and technology, affairs related to protection of intellectual property generated out of their research and evolving new business potentials from that IP.
- Focusing on regulations and requirements for projects/policies coming out of DBT, DST, ICAR, state and central government, international grants, etc. with a focus on SME-related grants, funding, subsidies, contract research and collaborations thereby creating a platform for rich and beneficial research.
- Fostering IP Policy for the university covering several aspects like IP screening and filing procedure to be followed in the institute and other IP related aspects (prosecution, maintenance); biodiversity related issues; facilitating technology transfer and licensing system; developing incubation centers, formularizing the consultancies procedure to be followed in the university and development of potential business projects using the IP generated.
- Docketing procedures assessing the working of the inventions filed by the university.
- Developing policies on various aspects to effect the conducting of research in various fields and procurement of different grants.
- Developing mechanisms for procuring benefits from university’s existing IP.
- Focusing on various grants at national and international level to carry out an effective research in various fields.
- Focusing on increased collaborations with Industry for transferring technology, enter into licensing contracts for effective use of IP to create a favorable environment for industry and the Institute to collaborate for mutual benefit.
- Developing standards and formats for Memorandum of Understanding/Memorandum of Association; establishing business proposals encompassing financial factors among others for entering into contracts with the industries.
- Generating self-employability of the students graduating from the university in the direction of entrepreneurship by establishing Spin-off companies that are established around intellectual property derived or belonging to the university; establishing a standard deal between the university and the company in terms of providing exclusive or limited license, financial issues, providing infrastructure, equipment, know-how; conditions for termination of contracts; royalties to the faculty on the net sales done or any upfront cash payment; re-investment of the royalties generated for infrastructure development, research and other university related matters.
- Developing a platform for innovators outside the university to bring in their own intellectual property, starting and nurturing their business in university environment in the form of spin-in companies; establishing the contract details covering the use of university infrastructure, equipments with a fees charged; taxation; royalties to the faculty on the net sales done or any upfront cash payment; re-investment of the royalties generated for infrastructure development, research and other university related matters.
- Seeking and entering into contract research agreements with various governmental department or industry for providing expert advices from various departments, schools, centers of excellence to undertake research for them using the university’s upgraded equipments, sound know-how as well as quantity of human resources.
- Formularizing the consultancy procedures which can be provided by the quantitatively and qualitatively diverse know-how of the university.
- Setting in motion companies, centered around agricultural, animal husbandry and dairy products, establishing the complete organizational structure; re-investment of the profits generated for infrastructure development, research and other university related matters.
- Expansion of production unit for student training to pilot industrial scale so that products generated can be marketed to avoid wastage and thereby providing societal benefit by giving them fresh and contamination-free products.
- Facilitating optimal utilization of university’s IP for societal welfare and benefit
The mission of IPC is to provide a rich and encouraging platform to the potential innovators, scientists, students, entrepreneurs and investors for providing a rich culture of IP and fostering the technology generated for societal benefits. This mission also includes providing such a platform also for capitalization of know-how, expertise and human resources in consultancy. In addition, the mission facilitates projects, contract research and grants around innovation development.
Constitution of Directorate of IPC
Keeping the above objectives in mind, Directorate of Innovation, Projects and Consultancy (IPC) was established in year 2013. It comprises of the following members:-

- 50 Coordinators (IPC coordinators, schools coordinators and departmental coordinators)
- Nodal Officer - Entrepreneurship Cell
This directorate is established with a mandate to facilitate the protection of intellectual property generated, commercialization of technology, facilitating the projects and grants, aiding the development of business potential of the IP generated, promoting incubations, entrepreneurship, promoting awareness, organizing sensitization programmes, developing linkages with likeminded organizations, industries and formulization of policies related to IP, science-based business ethics, contract research and consultancy projects.

- Communication with relevant authorities of state and central government for directions on policy for relevant science themes and fields as well as EU and international policies potentially beneficial to SHUATS.

- Developing policies of the directorate and university towards innovation for internal and external execution.
- Promoting policies and preparing position papers from the university and summarizing policies from the government.

- Collecting research data from the coordinators of different schools with the focus on identifying potential intellectual property generated.
- Developing IP Related procedure for the university
- Consultation with the faculty members for identifying the patentability aspects of the invention
- Assessing, evaluating, consulting and investigating IP development in liaison with IP lawyers
- Assessing the Potential commercial valuation of the innovations for business development.
- Assessing the potentials of research innovations coming out of SHUATS and or through collaborations and consultancy, and prioritizing the potentials accordingly for the development of intellectual property.
